Who really has the most reliable 3G network?

A new study names Sprint the best 3G cell phone carrier in the Bay Area, in the never-ending quest to claim the throne.

Sprint's Now Network was named the most reliable 3G network in the Bay Area in a recent study conducted by PC World magazine. The study examined how reliable the connection rates are for the most popular smartphones on the nation's top four carriers.

Sprint's Google powered HTC Hero and Verizon’s Motorola DROID and T-Mobile’s HTC G1 all beat out AT&T's iPhone, what many believe to be the most popular iPhone. By the study may be more of an indictment of the network than the twinkle of Steve Jobs' eye, giving more fodder to the Apple lovers dreaming of an AT&T free iPhone.

Still AT&T's performance has dramatically improved over the past year and delivered the fastest download speeds of any of the four major carriers.

"Sure, you can have an app for this or a map for that, but it won’t do you any good if you can’t connect when you want to," the company said in a statement

That may be true but it also doesn't do any good to be able to connect to an apps on a network fending off the threat of going out of business.
