Air quality advisory issued through Wednesday due to wildfire smoke

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District issued an air quality advisory for Tuesday and Wednesday because of smoke coming into the region from wildfires further north in California and Oregon.

The wildfire smoke is not expected to exceed national health standards or prompt a Spare the Air alert, but air district officials said smoky or hazy skies and the smell of smoke are possible in parts of the Bay Area.

Ty Gregg loves basketball but doesn’t love the way he’s feeling after playing basketball Tuesday evening.

“I’ve been able to breathe a little bit better, even still, the air quality is dragging me down, feels a little tight. I’ve been holding my right chest a little bit too,” he said.

In Marin County, So many people called 911 to report the smell of smoke, the sheriffs office issued a Nixle alert asking people to stop overloading emergency dispatch.

Several Bay Area police departments, including Santa Clara,  are asking their citizens to do the same.

“We had two sets of two matches. Two matches at 6:30 and two matches at 7:30,” said Thomas Howe of Stonewall Sports SF.

It’s dedicated to the LGBTQ community and it had kickball matches scheduled for this field near 7th and Folsom, but health concerns over air quality forced a cancellation.

“I think the players in general are understanding, I think in general we're on board that it was the right call,” said Howe.

Jim Goode was out for dinner with his daughter in Noe Valley, following a run in Golden Gate Park.

“It’s usually cloudy in the afternoon, so I didn’t really notice smoke,” he said. “I did notice it a little bit more as I came here towards the Mission. The sky was sort of hazy.”

The smoke from wildfires near the Oregon border coming down to the Bay Area has led to an air quality advisory through Wednesday. Kris Sanchez has more on how to limit health impacts.

Anyone who smells smoke is advised to stay inside with windows and doors closed and to set air conditioning units and car vent systems to re-circulate to stop outside air from coming inside, according to the air district.
