U.S. Veteran Survives Avalanche on Mount Everest

A Wisconsin man who was trying to become the first wounded veteran to ascend Mount Everest survived a deadly avalanche triggered by a massive 7.8-magnitude earthquake in Nepal on Saturday, NBC News reported. Benjamin Breckheimer, who was injured by a bomb in Afghanistan in 2009, called his mother to say he survived the avalanche. "I'm a wreck," his mother, Mary Lyons, told NBC affiliate WBBH. "I'm glad that I got to talk to him." At least 18 people perished in the avalanche TEXTin the deadliest day in the mountain's history.
