Fire crews responded to a reported gas leak in Cupertino on Monday afternoon, according to the Santa Clara County Fire Department.
The leak was reported on Gascoigne Drive about 3 p.m., and residents were being evacuated from about 25 homes in the area of Gascoigne, Sterling Boulevard and Barnhart Avenue, fire officials said. No injuries were reported.
The leak was caused when a third-party contractor struck a 2-inch gas line with a backhoe about 2:20 p.m at a home on Gascoigne Drive, according to PG&E.
PG&E crews were on the scene to repair the leak. Fire officials estimated the repair would take about two hours.
PG&E said two customers will be without service after the repair is made.
PG&E reminds contractors and homeowners to use hand tools rather than equipment when digging in an area that’s marked.
