Man Crashes on Highway 80 in Hercules After Being Shot Twice: CHP

A man crashed on Interstate Highway 80 in Hercules Thursday night after he was shot twice, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The 25-year-old man was driving a black Nissan Altima on eastbound Highway 80 east of Pinole Valley Road at about 10:30 a.m.
 
A white sedan pulled up to his right and someone in that car fired several gunshots at him. The Nissan was struck four times and the man was shot twice in his right leg, CHP officials said.

He swerved to the left and crashed into the highway's center divider. The Nissan rolled several times but landed on its wheels.

The gunshot victim was taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek and was later released from the hospital.

The driver of the white sedan fled the area and has not been found. CHP investigators shut down the highway until about 1 a.m. while they collected evidence.
CHP officials said they don't know if this shooting is related to other highway shootings in the area.

There have been at least 20 shootings on highways in Contra Costa and Alameda counties since November, including 12 or more on Highway 80.

CHP officials have said many of the shootings are suspected to be gang-related, but otherwise have released few details about their motive.

Most recently a woman, identified as 25-year-old San Francisco resident Shanique Marie, was shot and killed on state Highway 4 in Pittsburg on Wednesday morning. A man in the car with her was also wounded.

Pittsburg police said the shooting was targeted, but have not elaborated on the motive in that case either. Any suspects remain at large.
