Popular Pop-Up Library to Remain in Northgate Mall Until April

A temporary, experimental pop-up library in the Northgate Mall in San Rafael has been renewed until April 2020.

The library that opened in December 2018 as a special seasonal treat was so successful that the Marin County Free Library, San Rafael Public Library and mall owner Merlone Geier Partners agreed to keep it open.

"Based on the success of the initial month-to-month pilot, and thanks to the support of Merlone Geier Partners, we have extended our agreement," San Rafael Library interim director Henry Bankhead said.

Bankhead said the library's location "provides free and easy access to a world of information and experiences."

The mall owners provided 3,000 square feet of space in a former shoe store that is near the food court and movie theater. The library is stocked with materials from the Marin County Free Library and is staffed primarily with employees of the San Rafael Public Library.

Patrons check out books and other media, pick up items on hold, drop off checked-out materials and can experience virtual reality and a 3D printer.

The library at Northgate Mall is open Mondays through Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. A regular, family story time is on Wednesdays at 2:30 p.m. and a book discussion is held once a month on Thursday.
