A married couple was attacked with a baseball bat during a home invasion in Brentwood early Wednesday morning, authorities said.

Medical crews responded just after 4 a.m. to a home in the 1600 block of Dill Court, according to the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District. One of the victims was airlifted to the hospital.

Police said the husband and wife were injured in the assault by three suspects who broke into their home through a rear glass door.

"The wife was sleeping on the couch," Brentwood Police Lt. Doug Silva said. "She was assaulted with a baseball bat. The husband was sleeping in the master bedroom where he too was assaulted with a baseball bat."

The woman's arm was broken, Silva said. The husband was worse off. He was airlifted to John Muir Medical Center with traumatic injuries. The wife was transported by ambulance to a hospital, fire officials said.

Brentwood police, who are investigating the incident, said they are still looking for a motive as the suspects did not steal anything.

“At this point, one thing I’m fairly confident in saying, it was not a random act of violence," Silva said. "It appears these people were targeted. We’re just not sure what the motive is at this time. We’re still working on it."

Silva said he’s hoping someone in the neighborhood saw something. One neighbor has come forward with video from a surveillance camera, but authorities are hoping for more.
