The Oakland Zoo will officially welcome a new resident Thursday morning.
Maggie is a one-month-old baby reticulated giraffe. She will be on exhibit for the first time Thursday. Maggie was born on January 12, 2012 to Twiga (Mom) and Mabusu (Dad). She is the first female giraffe born at the zoo in nearly a decade.
The birth is an effort to save a species. Over the past ten years, the population of wild reticulated giraffes has decreased by 80%. Currently, there are less than 5,000 of them in the wild worldwide.
