Shooting on I-880 Ends With ‘Major Vehicle Collision' in Fremont: Police

Police are investigating Wednesday a shooting on Interstate 880 in Fremont that ended with a crash on Auto Mall Parkway and Grimmer Boulevard.

According to the California Highway Patrol, their officers responded to a freeway shooting resulting from a traffic altercation on southbound I-880 at Industrial Parkway in Hayward on Wednesday afternoon.

Several minutes later, CHP officers found the suspect, later identified as Kevin Sanders, 28, driving recklessly on I-880 at Decoto Road. That’s when a pursuit started.

Officials said the pursuit continued into Fremont and ended when Sanders struck two vehicles within the city limits.

Sanders was later taken into custody.

CHP said Sanders and the victims of the crash suffered minor injuries and were medically treated.

The victims in the freeway shooting were contacted by CHP and determined to be uninjured.

CHP said that one bullet struck one of the victims’ vehicle.

According to officials, detectives from the CHP Golden Gate Special Investigations Unit responded to the scene to lead the investigation.

Sanders was later booked at the Alameda County Jail for several charges including attempted murder, shooting at an occupied vehicle, assault with a deadly weapon, hit-and-run and resisting arrest.
