Bay Area Schools With Campus Police That Do Not Define Officer Duties

School District Data

About This Series

About 665,000 students in the Bay Area attend school districts that pay law enforcement to regularly patrol campus, but exactly what those officers should or should not be doing isn’t always clear. The NBC Bay Area Investigative Unit discovered that many school districts fail to outline even the most basic responsibilities of school officers, putting children and teens at risk of receiving a criminal record for what some describe as just childish misbehavior. The Investigative Unit also found schools call police on minorities and students with disabilities at disproportionately high rates.
