It's not just a new Department of Motor Vehicles branch office (though it will indeed be that, once the East San Jose DMV location opens).
It's also where safety begins.
In January, a new DMV branch office will open at 2222 Senter Road, according to state Sen. Jim Beall -- and that will make San Jose a safer place, he said.
After Assembly Bill 60, 1.4 million undocumented immigrants in California are now eligible for driver's licenses. East San Jose is historically an "underserved community" with undocumented people, the senator said -- and it's a "false assumption" to think that they won't drive.
This way, they'll drive with licenses issued at the new office.
"I think the DMV made a great choice," he said in a release Wednesday.
