A CHP cruiser ended up crashing into several parked cars and a fire hydrant early Thursday morning in Oakland during a chase of a speeding four-door sedan.
Sgt. Joe Azvedo said the chase began at 2:13 a.m. when an officer spotted the car on westbound Interstate Highway 580 near Eden Canyon with an expired registration. The CHP said the car didn’t stop and a pursuit ensued with speeds reaching more than 100 mph.
The driver of the sedan got off the highway at the Foothill/MacArthur off-ramp and the chase continued on MacArthur Boulevard. At some point, a passenger in the car pulled something out like a fire extinguisher, and began spraying the CHP cars, Azvedo said.
During the chase, the CHP cruiser crashed near the corner of Bryon and MacArthur, smashing into several parked cars, a light pole and a fire hydrant along the way.
Both officers inside the SUV were not hurt, but the suspect or suspects got away.
